BLM Reminds Public of Ongoing Fire Restrictions throughout Desert District

With the opening of hunting season throughout southern California, public land users are reminded of ongoing fire restrictions in place that could affect legal hunting activities as well as other recreational opportunities.

The BLM California Desert District (CDD) fire restrictions are still in effect and will most likely continue into the winter season. With the forecast of minimal precipitation in the near future, the threat of wildfires will continue to be a concern.

Recreational target shooting is prohibited in areas currently under Stage III seasonal restrictions. However, current fire restrictions do not prohibit using firearms in relation to legal hunting activities.  Please check with your local sheriff’s office or California Department of Fish and Wildlife Office regarding the use and type of weapons allowed in your area.

Campers are reminded that current fire restrictions prohibit open fires of any kind in Stage III areas and require a campfire permit to be obtained within Stage I areas.  Additional information, including maps of the restriction areas, can be obtained from your local BLM office.  You can also visit the BLM website at www.blm.gov/ca/cdd.  If you are planning on visiting your public lands please remember to carry a fire extinguisher and/or shovel in the event of an unintentional fire start.

If you encounter a resource crime, please report it to the Federal Interagency Communication Center at (888) 233-6518.  Questions regarding fire restrictions can be directed to Brian Willbond (Ridgecrest Field Office, Barstow Field Office, Needles Field Office) at (760) 240-8541, or Clay Howe (Palm Springs/South Coast, El Centro Field Offices) at (951) 903-4140.
